The moisture content of your firewood is very important. Part of our job as chimney sweeps in Taos and Santa Fe is to educate the public about this issue. Ideal moisture content of firewood is 20-25%. At that moisture content, a pound of firewood will put out 6200 BTU's of heat when it burns in your fireplace or wood stove. At 50% moisture (firewood that has been left out in the rain or snow,) the same pound of wood only puts out 4,000 BTU's. Burning wet or green wood increases creosote accumulation in your chimney, increasing danger and lowering performance. Please keep your fire wood dry. Do not burn "green" (not completely seasoned) wood.
